Abstract

In 2011 Buckinghamshire County Council commissioned IDRICS to research 'Care to Parent: Supporting Care leavers who are parents'. The research was conducted because of the evidence to show that young people who were 'looked after' may be unsupported when they become parents. In turn, this makes it harder for them to raise their own children. The aim of the research was that young people who had been in care and become parents, would be interviewed in order to find out what their experiences of receiving services from Buckinghamshire County Council Social Service. There were also a small number of interviews with staff from Social Service employees who provided services to young people in care. The method used was in-depth interviews with the intention that these would provide detailed information about the experiences of the young people in order to inform social work practice within Bucks and in so doing aim to improve services to other young people in care. Additionally it was hoped that through dissemination the research would help other areas to improve their support to young parents who had been, or were, in care. A comprehensive literature search will identify relevant research which informs our background knowledge and will feed into recommendations for improving practice and support for parents who are care leavers within Buckinghamshire.
