Abstract

Emotions are central to our experiences and understanding of social life. However, there remains a paucity of critical inquiry into the emotional experiences of sport coaches at all levels. This paper is developed from a 12-month investigation into the emotions, practices and meaning-making of two community sport coaches, who were charged with enacting a government funded project to promote prosocial behaviour through sport. Multiple qualitative methods (i.e., 45-hours of participant observations and 42-hours of semi-structured interviews) were utilised to generate the data for this paper. An iterative approach to data analysis was employed, with symbolic interactionist theorising of emotion providing the primary heuristic framework. The key insights shared in this paper relate to the ways in which the coaches’ experiences of anger were grounded in a) their relations with the participants who frequently engaged in various forms of anti-social behaviour, b) the performance expectations associated with their community coaching role, c) their feelings of unpreparedness when attempting to deal with such incidences, and d) their perceived need to regulate their displays of anger so as to avoid receiving negative performance evaluations from those participating in, and overseeing, the project. These findings reinforce existing calls for curriculum leaders and developers to embrace the emotional dimensions of coaches’ work. The inclusion of such knowledge is arguably essential if we are to provide educational provision that reflects the dynamic (and often challenging) environments in which community sport coaches are expected to promote positive changes in the thinking, feeling, and behaviour of others.
