Abstract

This workshop is a response to the challenge of teaching academic writing in these changing times of post-truth, post-literacy and global English. It will support the education strand of the Bucks Strategy, at the heart of which is a commitment to applying the latest pedagogical methods to engage and empower students. Recognising that millennials and non-traditional students present both a challenge and an opportunity, Coventry University recently launched an MA in Academic Writing Theory and Practice whose indicative content ranges from self-efficacy and writer identity to rhetoric and digital literacy. Drawing on the same academic literacies scholarship that informs the Coventry MA, this workshop will provide an opportunity for colleagues to participate in group discussions and activities designed to develop their understanding of the student experience of writing in HE and to generate ideas and promote good practice for supporting students on their journey to become competent and confident writers.
