Abstract

In January 2020, the Department of Nursing, University of Malta introduced the Google Sites Practice electronic portfolio (GSPep) to a cohort of pre-registration nursing students. The electronic portfolio was adopted as a learning environment to foster the systematic curation of practice experiences and reflections that demonstrate safe and effective practice across the six domains of nursing competence. Learning through guided reflection is widely recognised as an apt approach to learning and educating across the health care workforce (REF). The development of competences, as opposed to compiling a knowledge base and skills sets is now acknowledged as the hallmark of good education and training in the health care capacity building (REF). This paper presents a SWOT analysis of the initiative to plan the introduction of the electronic portfolio to nursing students. The academics leading the initiative present a critical discussion of the identified strengths of the initiatives together with an analysis of observed opportunities which were revealed to date. The weaknesses which may have jeopardised the effectiveness of the initiative are analysed in view of managing?containing them in future. The actual and predicted threats which may compromise the efficacy of the initiative are evaluated with risk management in mind. Drawing upon the relevant literature and the existent literature, the paper reports a case study of an initiative which is relevant to educators and educational entities who are seeking to deliver educational programmes and opportunities in the challenging but essential realm of health workforce capacity building .
