Abstract

Despite the considerable time, costs and emissions involved, long-distance transport has become a regular activity for many individuals and businesses. The recent pandemic lockdowns showed many of us how important it is to be physically connected, and in today’s globalised world, that means being connected over any distance whether long or short. Without the continuance of global supply chains throughout the pandemic, it is highly unlikely that lockdowns would have been feasible in the first place. On the other hand, recent developments in virtual connectivity have shown us that it may be possible to cut out or reduce the need for transport in some situations – leading to the question of whether there are any aspects of long-distance transport that can be considered dispensable. Long distance transport is often defined as any journey beyond 50 or 100 kilometres, though in some cases longer distances (e.g. 300 kms) are used. David’s professorial lecture will examine trends in long-distance transport, highlighting the critical role of aviation, particularly over longer distances, both in the UK and internationally and will consider a full range of trip purposes that will help to shed light on whether there will be any scope for curtailing demand for this type of transport in the future.
