Abstract

Hear the Fear is a practice-based research work by Dr. Nela Milic, Professor in Arts Practice at Buckinghamshire New University. The film engages with now 18-month long rebellion against the regime corruption in Serbia and in particular, the protest in the Serbian capital, Belgrade on the 15th of March 2025. This was the largest gathering the country has ever seen during which the government chose to use an acoustic weapon on protesters. Through the survivor accounts, we captured the victims’ experience of this sound technology and created evidence of its use that the government denies. It has shocked the nation, not only because of its impact, but the audacity of the regime to use it against its own people. The film is made in collaboration with Professor Zoran Djukanovic from Architecture Faculty in Belgrade and has been supported by Tracts COST Action, European Commission and Bosch Alumni Network. The film premiered at the exhibition Monsters of Paradise at Iofos art project, Athens in March this year. The show is curated by Elena Poka. The film was screened at The Gallery Kolektiv in Belgrade in March and it is part of another group exhibition at Zonderflag art centre in Buenos Aires in July 2026. The exhibition is curated by Mirta Kupferminc, Monika Gabriela Dorniak, Rebecca Harris and Olga Bubich. The film lasts 17.50 seconds and can be exhibited with three objects that would serve as an installation accompanying the film.
