Geotones is an interactive sound installation exploring the resonant and vibrational properties of stone through tactile interaction, material investigation, and electronic sound processes. The work centres on three stone slabs: rosso, calacatta, and sedimentary travertine, which are activated through gestures including stroking, tapping, and knocking. These interactions are recorded using contact microphones that capture the mechanical vibrations transmitted through the materials themselves. The recorded sounds are subsequently played back into the stones using vibration speakers, exciting the materials’ resonant frequencies and revealing their latent sonic characteristics. The resulting vibrations are routed through a modular synthesiser system, allowing further modulation and interaction in real time. Visitors are invited to engage with the installation through this interface, shaping and transforming the evolving sonic textures generated by the stones. The project forms part of an ongoing practice-based investigation into sound, materiality, resonance, and architecture, examining how physical materials can function simultaneously as sound source, resonating body, and acoustic filter.
