Abstract

The ability to provide effective and supportive learning environments in community settings is critical to sustaining the nursing workforce and ensuring high-quality practice education. This presentation reports on a successful national collaboration to develop two new resources: the Charter for Enabling a Good Learning Environment and the Maturity Matrix for Enabling a Good Learning Environment. Developed through partnership between the Institute of Health Visiting (iHV) and the School and Public Health Nurses Association (SAPHNA) and funded by NHS England Workforce Training and Education Directorate, these resources were co-produced with educators, practitioners and students across education and practice settings. The Charter for Enabling a Good Learning Environment sets out eight core principles for enabling good learning environments: leadership, communication, supportive supervision, assessment, interprofessional collaboration, equality, safety and evidence-informed innovation. The Maturity Matrix provides a structured, self-assessment framework enabling individuals and teams to evaluate their current practice against the eight core principles for a good learning environment and identify priorities for development. Early feedback highlights the value of the tools in promoting reflective discussions, clarifying expectations between supervisors and learners, and supporting inclusive and high-quality supervision and assessment. The session will share examples of how the resources are being used to strengthen quality and consistency of practice learning and develop professional culture across Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) and broader community contexts. It will explore factors that support or challenge implementation in the community setting and implications for workforce retention, professional development and the sustainability of learning in practice.
