The sound composition for Silent Room V.04, a collaborative installation by Nathalie Harb and Gerard Gormley, was developed as part of a sonic architecture commissioned by SONCITIES and presented during the London Festival of Architecture. The work explored themes of migration, listening, shelter, and urban belonging through site-responsive sound practice and spatial installation. The composition combined field recordings gathered across Ireland, Lebanon, Armenia, Mexico, and Barbados, alongside additional open-source recordings, which were re-played into materials at the installation site using vibrational speakers and re-recorded through contact microphones. This process allowed the physical materials of the site to shape and filter the sounds, creating a layered sonic environment that reflected ideas of cultural movement, transformation, and encounter. Designed to accompany Harb’s architectural installation, the sound work contributed to the project’s broader investigation into acoustic refuge and sonic wellbeing within urban space. The composition formed part of a collaborative interdisciplinary research project involving sound art, architecture, spatial practice, and public installation.
