Abstract

The musical composition for Emerald Nightingales – Irish Nurses in the NHS was created to support the film’s exploration of memory, migration, and oral history. Developed in response to participants’ testimonies and the documentary’s archival material, the score was designed to complement the emotional tone and atmosphere of the film while remaining sensitive to the lived experiences being recounted. The music accompanies interviews and archival sequences throughout the documentary, helping to connect personal recollections with the wider historical context of Irish nurses working within the NHS. Through restrained compositional approaches and ambient textures, the soundtrack supports the reflective character of the film and contributes to its engagement with themes of identity, place, and remembrance. The composition forms part of the wider interdisciplinary project Emerald Nightingales – Irish Nurses in the NHS, led by Dr Tom McGorrian, which combines documentary film, oral history, archival research, exhibition, and podcast outputs to document and preserve the experiences of Irish migrant nurses in Britain.
