Abstract

There is an acknowledged emphasis on prevention of diseases now seen across government publications and as part of priorities for the NHS. Nurses, whatever their role, need to have sufficient knowledge to support patients with prevention of long-term issues including dementia. Evidence is now available that provides better understanding of the modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for dementia. Nurses have key roles in providing support for a range of patients to better understand how to modify their risk of developing dementia. Nurses are also likely to have roles working with key populations who will experience significant risk of dementia. Therefore, nurses understanding of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for dementia is an important area for continuing professional development. This article provides an overview of risk factors for dementia and offers an outline of approaches to manage modifiable risk to support prevention and delay of dementia.
