It has emerged that a number of healthcare assistants (HCAs) want to gain better education to ensure evidenced-based nursing practice. Undertaking a diploma or degree includes practice experience, but highly values science as its primary basis. This is proposed to be deficient alone as it fails to give HCAs a deeper understanding of practice through learning from it, to care at a higher level. To facilitate this there needs to be a way to access a professional qualification in nursing that values learning from practice. The subject of a practice pathway to achieving professional registration as a nurse, open to HCAs and direct entrants, is open for debate.
