Abstract
Beechwood is a travel memoir and a reflection on language, literature and place names and, at a deeper level, on the problematics of border construction - spatial, temporal and psychological. In these days of growing nationalist sentiment, it serves as a reminder of just how mixed together we all are – in things deeply familiar lurk far-away worlds and if you scratch the surface of the strange you are likely to find the commonplace.
