It is often stated that strength and conditioning (S&C) as a profession is both an art and a science. However, recently in certain quarters, the role of the S&C practitioner has arguably become more that of a sports scientist, resulting in a lack of emphasis upon coaching. In order to address this, it is proposed that the development of a training philosophy which considers the importance of both coaching and sports science should form an inherent part of an S&C professional’s development. The following article provides an overview of an S&C training philosophy, developed through a combination of vocational and academic education, extensive practical coaching experience, and 15 years of military service. It is hoped that this article may challenge some existing beliefs and inspire fellow S&C practitioners to reflect upon their own practice, and even perhaps to consider developing their own training philosophy with which to help guide their own professional practice.
