In recent years, Universities have seen a rise in the number of students that enrol with a diagnosed mental health condition or develop a condition and/or mental health symptoms during their programme. This study explored this contemporary issue as students with a mental health diagnoses encounter challenges from their symptoms and medication side effects and, also from the academic pressure of the programme. This is a qualitative phenomenological research study, which explored the experience of courage in pre-registration nursing students diagnosed with a mental health condition. The themes identified were; mental health recovery, motivation for nursing, discovering a new self and the pursuit of goals. The focus of the study was courage and the different experiences of the students and how they used courage to fuel their progression on the programme despite the challenges of their mental health condition. Courage has mainly been associated with certain professions such as the army and soldiers but this study demonstrated that courage is inherent in all of us and it can manifest in different disguises dependent on the situation. The research recommendations identified the strategies and practical approaches that can be adopted by Higher Education to support students with a diagnosed mental health condition or those that develop mental health symptoms whilst studying. In future research, it will be important to explore the experience of courage in Black and Ethnic Minority groups as these were not represented in the study.
