Abstract
Skilled and compassionate communication involving the patient and family/carers is a priority of care in all areas of clinical practice. This is particularly crucial in palliative and end-of life-care, when people can be at their most frightened and vulnerable. Patients are clear in their requirements, they expect clear, transparent, honest and compassionate communication from the healthcare professionals caring for them. However, it appears that some dissatisfaction and concerns in many interactions remain, particularly in end-of-life care, where patients and families report insensitive communication and mixed messages, including a lack of compassion and understanding of their emotional wellbeing. This article will examine the challenges and complexities in patient/ family communication and explore how sensitive and skilled communication with patients/ families can be achieved in clinical practice.
