The history of photography and the practice of visual anthropology have tended to repress or conceal the process of production by effacing the photographer or anthropologist’s presence and cultural background. Therefore, the ideological nature of the representation is hidden, and dominant social relations are reproduced and reinforced through the act of photographing those who do not have the means to represent themselves. Furthermore, the photographic archive, which holds significance as the means by which historical knowledge and forms of remembrance are accumulated, stored and recovered, is often assumed to be a neutral repository of facts and documentary evidence. However, power relations continue to be at play; and these processes of selection reflect a significant power over history, memory and identity.
