Abstract

Stemming from PEER's acclaimed exhibition of Olga Jevrić's work, this workshop, 'Monuments for Everyday', invited the local community to collect and bring hard materials that we find on the streets - aggregate, terracotta, concrete, cement and others. We worked with these largely discarded elements of the urban environment by transforming them into precious artefacts through wrapping, filing and reshaping them, as well as making a collection of their dust. These mini-sculptures were then carried to John Frankland's Boulder in Shoreditch Park as an appreciation of its long-standing monumental presence in the neighbourhood. The admiration of sturdy elements of nature like rocks and clay and their intervention in our space and time was the ethos of Jevrić's investigations of form and so through this workshop we aim to connect to her sculptural compositions.
