The following chapter is based on my own interaction with the people of The London Borough of Southwark, particularly in the Elephant and Castle area, and it is drawn from my experience as a participatory artist working with its communities. It proposes that the engagement with 'place' is crucial for art to be transformative because, when art is 'divorced' from place this transformation is lost and the main value of the participatory practice diminishes - the connection to the place. I will be reflecting on how the projects I worked on in the last decade started to change the way many in the Southwark community felt about an urban environment that they had felt ostracized from, but were severely affected by.
