Existing research explores GTAs’ liminal experiences along three key spheres: being an international/migrant teacher, the ‘knotty’ GTA role itself, and being a PhD student (Sun, 2024; Kaizuka, 2023). This reflection captures accounts of GTAs’ liminal identities by exploring liminality according to three alternate features: foreign origin GTAs in the UK teaching pre-registration, international students in a Nursing and Midwifery School. A combination of these attributes establishes several layers of liminal detachment while emphasising cultural and social intersectionality for GTAs. This positionality proves complex and worthy of further exploration because this set of characteristics is seldomly explored in relation to the GTA experience. Liminality problematises individuals’ marginalisation from mainstream society, followed by their reintegration while recognising the presence of indeterminacy and ambiguity (Bhabha cited in Chakraborty, 2016: 146). This reflection grapples with the “limen” or margin, which is the space where foreign origin, non-registration GTAs operate within the School of Nursing and Midwifery in a UK university. Contemporary iterations of the theory prioritise the borders of liminality, which describe the “in-between space” individuals occupy (Turner, 1996: 145). This reflection’s contribution addresses the wider implications for GTAs in relation to issues of identity and professional practice, while emphasising the role played by cultural, language, and discipline differences between GTAs and their students.
