As the UK population ages, the number of older adults living with dementia admitted to hospital following hip fracture is increasing. Pain management in this group is often sub-optimal, as a result of cognitive impairment, staff uncertainty and organisational barriers. This article explores the challenges of pain assessment and management in recovery areas, where patients are typically unable to self-report pain and, accordingly, there is a reliance on staff interpretating non-verbal cues. This article covers themes including educational gaps, patient-related complexities and systemic issues affecting care delivery Recommendations are offered to enhance training, implement clear protocols and improve the use of pain-assessment tools. The article highlights the need for dementia-informed care environments, further research into safe opioid use and multidisciplinary approaches. Addressing these challenges can support earlier mobilisation after surgery for people with dementia, better clinical outcomes and more compassionate, evidence-based care for this vulnerable population.
