Faecal incontinence is common and under-reported, and many patients (possibly most) do not seek health care for their symptoms. Whether they do so because of embarrassment or because of symptom acceptance is unclear. Treatment is empirical, with a poor evidence base for any conservative or surgical intervention. Randomised trials have been rare.
